  • Describe the history of the lighthouse

The first lighthouse was a square pyramidal tower made of timber. By 1899 it had been attacked by white ants and needed to be repaired.

The light was occulting and had two red sectors.

The light was originally fueled by kerosene but after a fire in 1909 it was converted to acetylene. This was the second fire in the lantern room; the lightkeeper was asked to resign as a result.

The timber tower was replaced by a steel skeletal tower and modern light in 1962 -- the original lantern was not re-used. Location of the lens is to be confirmed.

One lightkeeper was stationed here. The lightkeeper's cottage is now a museum and the lantern is displayed on a brick stub tower. The original lantern is in poor condition. The top part of the second tower is also on the site.

The 1962 tower was replaced around 2020 by a "light on a pole" and was downgraded from lighthouse to major light.
