Located at the top of Mcarther Street, Valrose Terrace is home to many families, but is also one of the most deprived areas of Dunoon. Some of the houses are privately owned, but a significant number of properties at Cowal Place are managed by Argyll Community Housing Association (ACHA).
There are no parks or play spaces in Cowal Place with the nearest play park at West Bay a 30-minute walk away. Many young people play outside, but access to quality community space that is safe for play and community activities is very limited in this area of Dunoon.
There is a large, shared car park in the centre of Cowal Place, where, overtime, litter has accumulated. A corner section of the car park is owned by ACHA. In the past there have been consultations to explore the potential of bringing play equipment and better access to bin storage into this space, but these ideas have never been actioned because of funding and complications around access.
There is a clear need to consider how spaces in and around this area can be developed to support play and activities that will improve the quality of life for local people while responding to health inequalities and the higher rates of child poverty in Dunoon.
