Allanton village in North Lanarkshire experiences surface water flooding risks associated with legacy mining impacts, ferruginous (iron-rich) groundwater, and altered hydrology. Residential properties and public spaces in Allanton village are at risk.

In 2024–2025, AtkinsRéalis completed a feasibility study identifying multiple viable NFM interventions to reduce downstream flood peaks and slow overland flow. Based on detailed catchment modelling and field surveys, the following low-cost, high-impact interventions are proposed:

·       Leaky dams and woody diverters in key drainage ditches

·       Brash bundles to intercept overland flow in source areas

·       Bank modifications to redirect high flows away from sensitive areas

·       Tree planting and riparian habitat enhancement to boost infiltration and slow runoff

This project will directly reduce surface water flood risk to homes in Allanton, improve water quality and biodiversity in the Coal Burn and Kings Hill corridor and support climate resilience, nature-based solutions, and local community benefit.
