Tesco Development Site - Glasgow Harbour

PLANS to build a £30 million Tesco Extra store at Glasgow Harbour were approved by Glasgow city council on 5 Oct 2012 (Ref No 11/01264/DC). (Planning consent only lasts for 3 years so this will expire on 5 Oct 2015) The superstore – which the company says will create 500 new jobs – is a replacement for original plans to build on a site at Beith Street, which was met with protest. Community councils as far as Hillhead, councillors and residents opposed the proposal, some forming an action group called Stop Tesco Owning Partick and questioning the problems faced with an increase in traffic and its impact on the local traders around Partick Cross. The supermarket giant then struck a deal with Glasgow Harbour Ltd last year in a bid to quell resident objection, planning for a new site between Riverside Walkway and South Street. The impact on the local community is uncertain including the net impact on local jobs, local shops, air pollution (already bad due to road infrastructure), community access to quality food and a host of other issues,
