The gardens at Floyd Bennett Field began in 1970. FBGA was formed in 1996 and now operates as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) community garden. Members garden by permit only and volunteer as part of their agreement. Gardeners cultivate one of the largest community gardens in the U.S. The eleven acre site holds over four hundred garden plots including: a composting area, picnic area, Champions of Courage Garden with wheelchair access, Children's garden, pumpkin patch, Nature Walk and Wildlife Habitat, and an educational demonstration garden.
