Describe the history of the lighthouse
Requested by the owners of Troon harbour (3 miles east) and vessels from abroad using the Clyde, completed in January 1903. It was built on top of one of 2 beacons that were used to help craft navigate to local harbours, and to avoid the numerous rocks/shallow areas between Lady Island and the mainland. Being on top of one of the two beacons meant the alignment could still be used. The beacons are believe to have started around 1776. The 2nd Beacon is now a stone, conical tower near the lighthouse. The lighthouse was orginally gas powered, (the tank is still extant), modernised in the 1930s, but was not converted to electric until 2004. It has since altered again to use LED lighting. It was never a manned lighthouse but was not fully automated until electrification. The gas lighting allowed "semi-automation" and the the keeper(s) just to visit on a regular basis.

Other details
The uninhabited island can be visited via charter boat, usually an R.I.B. The Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB), doesn't list Lady Island on their website but it does say it is currently incomplete. It has a radar beacon as well as the light. Unusual design with external stairs. the island is an important seabird habitat. Most information is from the enschrage.nl webpage but not all could be verified elsewhere.
