  • Describe the history of the lighthouse

The lighthouse was first considered in 1847 but it was not until 1864 that building work started on the stone structure. The work was fraught with difficulties including a cholera epidemic and the fact that the first stone quarried was of insufficient quality. The lighthouse was eventually completed in 1867 though only entered service in 1870 when the 3rd order light was supplied by Chance Brothers of Smethwick near Birmingham. It is noted on the Chance order books as both fixed and revolving. The lighthouse was found to be in a poor position and a new lighthouse was built on the island of Tagomago. This was effectively the end for the Punta Grossa light and by 1914 the site became abandoned and has slowly decayed to the ruin that is visible today. It is unknown what happened to the Chance optic when the lighthouse was closed.
