  • Describe the history of the lighthouse

I have been able to find virtually no information regarding this lighthouse. It was situated off the Irrawady Delta and it is believed to have been destroyed in a cyclone in 1877. Currently a lightship SANDA (F1074) is stationed close to the location.

Update 17.07.2022. Probably, see history in the Publication of Directorate General Lighthouses and lightships Deep Bhavan, A13, Sector-24 Noida - 201 301 - "False Point Lighthouse", page 16.

"A screw pile lighthouse was designed and erected by Colonel Alex Fraser at Krishna Shoal, off the Burma Coast (that was a part of British India then) in 1869. This was boasted as an alternative for the Lightships placed in the mouth of Hooghly River and on Sand Heads of bay of Bengal. This gave a ray of hope to the Calcutta Port authorities, which lost four of their lightships within a span of twelve years, to the cyclones in the Bay of Bengal. A Lightship was manned on an average by 36 people and this heavy loss of lives, drove the authorities to the alternative of Screw pile lighthouses, that they hoped, can be dismantled and re-erected at new locations, as and when the shoal moves in with change of currents. But, after 8 years' satisfactory service, the Krishna Shoal Lighthouse was swilled with its entire staff, without a trace, in a devastating cyclone of 1878 and nobody dared to suggest another screw pile Lighthouse in the Bay of Bengal and so the Sand Heads was never lighted..."
