Describe the history of the lighthouse
The original lighthouse was designed by the British engineers. It's position was important for vessels passing through the Formosa Strait and it marks the west side of the northern entrance and is situated approximately 10 kilometres south east of Haitandao on a small island.
The lighthouse was supplied witha first order optic supplied by Chance Brothers of Smethwick near Birmingham. The lighthouse was destroyed in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895. A second lighthouse built in 1899 was destroyed in World War II and a temporary light was installed in 1947. It was not until 1982 that this temporary light was replaced and that was then replaced by the present light which was built in 1982. -
