One of the oldest cast iron lighthouses in the world it was built in England by Cottam and Hallen of Lambeth before being shipped to Bermuda and erected by the Royal Engineers. Whilst not being a particularly tall lighthouse it stands on one of the highest hills in the island so is 108 metres above sea level. The present light a first order revolving optic from Chance Brothers of Smethwick near Birmingham was installed in 1904. In 1964 the lighthouse was automated to run off electricity. The lighthouse is a popular visitor attraction and there is a tea room and gift shop on site. The lighthouse underwent refurbishment in spring of 2014 before suffering damage from hurricane Gonzalo in October of the same year. This damage was repaired and the lighthouse was reopened to visitors.
