Meadow Burn Grasslands and Wetlands

Loading...

This large area, which includes the helipad as well as the playing fields, is bounded on one side by the Witch burn, which is liable to flood, hence the three ponds which have been created as part of the flood protection scheme.

Recommendation: The ponds to be scraped out and planted with a variety of wetland plants, whilst the mown areas to be allowed to develop into flower-rich meadows. This can be done by changing the mowing regime so that only one cut is made per year, after the existing flowers (which include orchids and cuckoo flowers) have set seed. The cuttings should also be removed from the site and composted.

Tree planting to be done on site - a mix of hedging and standards - so that a tree corridor can be created.
