New York Harbor School on Governors Island

Harbor School is a unique educational resource. Find out more - newyorkharborschool.org

New York Harbor School Marine Affairs students engaged with Green Map System and other partners to map Governors Island and its Climate Engagement. Students charted Governors Island's relationship to the SDGs—the Sustainable Development Goals—climate vulnerabilities and ecosystem services. Created in two weeks, this youth-authored Green Map provides a perspective informed by field studies and observations across the island. See it on the Marine Affairs Page on NYHS’s website (scroll down).

Facilitated by the Marine Affairs program, this interdisciplinary course studies the relationships between humans and the environment. Students are set on a path, learning to evaluate policy and its progress in sustainability. In some cases, they propose new policies in their communities. Marine Affairs serves as one of New York Harbor School’s technical education courses, educating students at a college level and introducing them to many aspects of Governors Island, the marine environment, and the value of sharing their observations.
