  • Describe the history of the lighthouse

The Port Said lighthouse is iconinc for a number of reasons. It was erected by the French in 1869 to coincide with the opening of the Suez Canal which was a significant civil engineering and geopolitical achievement. It was one of the first lighthouses to be fitted with an electric light, which together with the lens was constructed by Barbier, Benard et Turenne. The tower was one of the first large structures to be built using reinforced concrete.

in 1919 the lens and light source were replaced with a Chance Brothers 1st order lens and an acetylene burner which remain in place today though not in use.

The lighthouse is located some distance from the foreshore, and was replaced as the port's functioning lighthouse by a steel structure. In 2011 the Egyptian government declared it a national monument.
