Describe the history of the lighthouse
The lighthouse was built by the British Empire in 1872 and was engineered by Robert Hall and David M Henderson to guide ships into the port of Fuzhou which had been opened up after the end of the Second Opium War in 1860. The lighthouse is on the southernmost of the Matsu Island and is approximately 25 km off the entrance to Fuzhou. The lighthouse is listed in Chance Brother's books as a first order optic both fixed and revolving. It was designated as a second grade historic building in 1988 and also features a lighthouse museum. The island has a population of approximately 200 and is accesible by ferry from the nearby larger island of Nangan though there is no overnight accommodation on the island for visitors and much of the island is given over to the military.
