New York Harbor School students collaborate with Earth Matter, a nonprofit organization helping the public with organic collection into compost. Their goal is to reduce organic waste put into garbage by encouraging and teaching people to compost, which is precisely what happens here. Earth Matter teaches the students how to compost, and then they use that knowledge to compost for the actual school, which is why they have that big tub. It's used to grind up the organic waste and make it into compost to fertilize the plants. Over the last three years, students have diverted about 30,000 lbs of school organic waste.

This helps many SDGs, like

Clean Water and Sanitation - Instead of dumping the waste in a landfill, they actually use they waste to their advantage which not only helps them but helps the environment as well.   

Climate Action - Instead of growing the food in a big farm with unhealthy chemicals that harm the environment they grow the food in a clean and non harmful way that while small still helps the climate in some form.

Zero Hunger - They're growing food preventing hunger.

Sustainable Cities - By helping sanitation, climate action, and hunger. This intern helps the city become more sustainable and eco friendly.

 Quality Education- They're educating the students how and why to compost and care for plants.

New York Harbor School Marine Affairs students will engage with partners to map Governors Island and its Climate Engagement. Students will create a Green Maps of Governors Islands' Relationship to SDGs - the Sustainable Development Goals, climate education, climate change vulnerabilities, innovation approaches to climate solutions, and bring waste to the visible eye. These maps will aid in students engaging in their community, displaying incorrectness and education to the public during climate week. Student-led and student-created. This will be something that will live and evolve each climate week as our city and world revolve around emerging climate issues. This student will swing back to update and evaluate our local and global progress.
