Stretching from Avenue A to B between East 7th and East 10th streets is the historic and always convivial Tompkins Square Park. Amazing music and community scene here in all seasons. Stars among the wildlife there, beloved Red tailed Hawks and Squirrels with black, brown and grey coats can be spotted on the lawns and in the majestic American Elms. Skate park, basketball courts, gym, ping pong tables, dog run, Sunday Greenmarket and compost dropoff, sacred Gaia Tree and the Temperance Monument, and more including the memorial marker for the Slocum disaster.
The Viele Map (1867) reveals the extent of the salt marsh and tidal creeks Tompkins Square Park was built upon, as seen in the cover photo here. Love seeing all the new plantings and pollinators? Get involved with Friends of TSP!
