Project Value

Shumeikeng Creek, once a nurturing stream that sustained the Zhuwei area of Tamsui, is the mother river of this land. Flowing from the foothills of Datunshan, meandering through forests, entering the community, and finally merging into the Tamsui River, it was once a paradise for childhood play, a lifeline for farmland irrigation, and a keeper of countless shared memories.

However, with urban development, the creek’s landscape has changed. Its course was enclosed by concrete, its ecosystem neglected, and this mother river gradually became known as a mere “big drainage ditch”.

This project aims to reignite public awareness and appreciation for Shumeikeng Creek through community participation and the Green Map approach. By encouraging more people to recognize the value of this creek and take part in conservation efforts, this initiative becomes more than just an environmental education project—it is an expression of community unity.

We seek to walk its paths, draw its landscapes, and observe with our own eyes, rediscovering Shumeikeng Creek’s stories. We want to ensure that it is no longer just a forgotten stream but a living entity, a cherished part of our land.

This is more than a map—it is an awakening movement.

Project outcomes

Over a month and a half, participants from the Tamsui Community college Green Map Workshop explored Shumeikeng Creek, tracing its past and present. We sought out hidden pockets of nature within the city, listened to the memories of longtime residents, and carefully documented the stories that unfolded along its banks.

Through this process, we created:

• Hand-drawn Landmark Cards, recording the details of this land so that its story can be touched and felt.

• A Google My Maps digital version, allowing more people to rediscover this creek through technology.

• A public, interactive Green Map, where anyone can explore the creek, learn about its sites through descriptions and icons, and view the hand-drawn landmark illustrations created by participants.

This is just the beginning. We look forward to more people joining this initiative, ensuring that the map continues to grow and serve as a bridge between people and the creek.

Currently, we are expanding upon the Shumeikeng Creek Green Map with the “My Stream– Shumeikeng Field Art Festival” project. This initiative takes the Green Map as its foundation and integrates various artistic media and themes, including a woven land map and botanical print maps, alongside many other creative works inspired by the mapping process. These will be exhibited in “My Stream – My Shumeikeng” at Tamsui Library from December 2024 to March 2025.

The exhibition has generated significant attention and engagement, proving how a single map can move hearts and create connections—between individuals, between people and communities, and between people and nature.

Moving forward, we plan to use this map as a foundation for in-depth local history and cultural research, incorporating personal stories and compiling them into a book. This book, alongside the Green Map, will serve as an educational tool for environmental awareness, brought to schools and community organizations through outreach programs. This project is scheduled for implementation between the second half of 2025 and the first half of 2026.

What changes have occurred as a result of this Green Map initiative?

Through this project, residents have begun paying attention to the creek’s environment. Many participants are now seeing and understanding Shumeikeng Creek for the first time, leading them to consider ways to improve and protect it.

The most significant transformations include:

1. Encouraging Community Dialogue and Collaboration – The Green Map workshop was not just about gathering information; it brought together residents from different backgrounds to collectively care for their local environment.

2. Bringing Visibility to an Overlooked Creek – Shumeikeng Creek was long ignored, but now it is being seen and appreciated once again.

3. Inspiring Action through Art – Many Green Map participants developed a love for nature sketching through this project. They have now formed a “Nature Sketching Club”, meeting every second Wednesday of the month to learn and grow together. By using art, they are deepening their relationship with the creek. The club currently has 14 members, and the number continues to grow.

We believe that when people see the creek from a new perspective, its future becomes filled with possibilities.

4. Green Map

What impact did using different tools have? Did they help reach different audiences? Have participants gained new perspectives on nature?

• Hand-drawn Landmark Cards allowed us to document the beauty and memory of the creek in the most heartfelt way. These illustrations express deep emotional connections to the place and are accessible to anyone who wishes to appreciate their environment with care.

• Google My Maps broke geographical barriers, turning this map into an open window for exploration. Even people from distant locations can now experience and learn about the beauty of Shumeikeng Creek through this digital tool.

By combining traditional and digital tools, we have ensured that this project reaches and resonates with diverse audiences.
