A walk along the banks of the River Kelvin that winds through Glasgow (9.8km, from the city all the way to Milngavie!) is a beautiful experience at any time of the year. Today, it's taken for granted that the Kelvin is thriving & healthy, a Glasgow City link to nature. Yet, it is only in recent years that the river's clean-up has supported its being such a rich natural habitat & thread of calm, right in the middle of the city.

Just 50 years ago, not only was the River Kelvin not thriving, it was a literal sewer for all of the chemicals disposed of by decades of industrial activity. Upon the closure of Glasgow's paper mills, & chemical & dye works in the 1950s & 1960s, it is only in the present day that the water table has been restored & healing of the Kelvin is apparent : from fish within the river to the wide variety of birds that find shelter in the tree-lined riverbank to a range of plant-life including rare species.

Definitely a Glasgow site to visit!
