In 2024, the Human Impacts Institute launched a Green Map project that placed youth leadership and community storytelling at its core. Through the Youth Speak Out! fellowship, 12 young people (primarily from underserved neighborhoods) received training in creative climate communication and collaboratively built a Green Map highlighting over 100 local climate and cultural initiatives across Marseille.
Beyond the map itself, the project had tangible, lasting impact. Fellows conducted over 40 interviews with residents, artists, and organizers across the city, capturing diverse visions of Marseille’s sustainable future. These voices became the foundation for a public exhibit, featuring youth-edited films, portraits of local leaders, and a mural synthesizing collective hopes for the city. The exhibit shared stories reshaped into public art, accessible resources, and educational tools.
The project also reached younger audiences. In Belle de Mai, second graders participated in workshops on climate and community, creating their own artwork on what a better Marseille could look like. Meanwhile, youth fellows grew into mentors and collaborators, working alongside film editors and local creatives to bring the final outputs to life.
This Green Map became a platform for action and belonging. It sparked new relationships between residents, inspired civic pride, and ensured that climate action in Marseille includes the voices of those most often left out.
The Human Impacts Institute is a long time friend of Green Map System, and back in 2020, they recognized our director as a Climate S'hero!
